As seniors age and can no longer drive or do the small things around the house, it becomes hard to remain at home. Yet, remaining at home as long as possible can be crucial for emotional and financial reasons.  You can make a difference.  In the process, you are preparing for your own future, by building a strong organization that will be there for you.  Meanwhile, you will get to know many of your neighbors, both members of Nauset Neighbors and other volunteers, and build a strong community. 

 

The demand for membership is growing but we have had to institute a waiting list because the number of new members we can accept is now limited by the number of new volunteers.  We are recruiting volunteers, and the more volunteers we have, the more members we can serve.  We are an all volunteer organization with no paid staff.

Most volunteers assist members once or twice a month.  There are opportunities to become more active, particularly as a call manager, if you are interested.

 Here are some of the skills we need:

·    Drivers to take members to medical, shopping, neighborhood and cultural appointments.   Many of us go shopping once a week.  Would you take a neighbor with you to Orleans, for example, or pick up some groceries for someone, or run an errand such as picking up a prescription?  Would you be willing to take someone to the library when you go either for books, or to a lecture or social event there?  Would you commit to taking a few people to an exercise class or to lunch at the local COA once a week?  If you have a subscription to WHAT, would you be willing to drive someone to one of your scheduled performances?  Would you drive a neighbor to Town Meeting?  Would you be willing to give someone a ride to a doctor’s appointment once a week?  These are examples of how you can help us with transportation.

 

·    Handymen for light home maintenance help –

o   light bulb changing where a ladder is needed

o   window screens: put up/take down

o   picture hanging

o   placing boxes on high shelves

o   other jobs that require use of indoor ladders


Call managers to take calls from members and arrange the help they need, either from other volunteers or from pre-screened vendors who will accept referrals.  We will train you to use a simple software program.

 

·    Computer and electronics helpers who can assist with basic computer, Kindle, cell phone, remote control and similar gadget setups and trouble shooting.

 

·    Miscellaneous Household Tasks:

o   Plant watering

o   Light gardening

o   Reading, games, friendly visits

o   Pet care where there is a temporary need

 

·    Organizational help for ongoing outreach, legal/financial and member services activities, such as recruiting other volunteers and participating vendors

If you can commit one to three hours, once or twice a month, for most volunteers or half a day a week for call managers, you can help. We understand cape life and will be flexible with your off-cape plans or visiting guests.

Volunteers either use a simple online signup sheet that lets them select which services best fit their schedule and interests, or they can wait to be called by our office staff.  The online signup lets you plan you schedule will in advance.  The phone calls let you do something at the last minute if you are free.
